Itinerary
**Some departures may have the stay in Kangerlussuaq on the last night of the tour instead of the first night.
Day 1: Copenhagen - Kangerlussuaq
Depart Copenhagen in the morning for a direct flight to Kangerlussuaq via Air Greenland. Upon arrival meet your guide for a tour of the city as well as a transfer to your hotel. Kangerlussuaq not only has some of the best and most stable weather in Greenland, but also the best access to the Ice Cap and wild life. Just minutes from your hotel you can often spot reindeer and musk oxen. Enjoy the tour by minibus as your guide tells the history of the area while showing the modern facilities such as the swimming pool and night clubs. A visit to the city museum is also included. Return to your hotel for dinner in the evening.
Day 2: Kangerlussuaq - Ilulissat
After breakfast at the hotel, transfer via Air Greenland to Ilulissat, a modern Greenlandic town north of the Arctic Circle. During a walk through the town, learn of the history of this area while visiting the old part of the town, which was from the beginning a Danish trading station. Other visits include the busy fishing harbor, the old church and city museum. Lunch at a local restaurant is also included. After the walk enjoy "coffee-mik" in a Greenlander's home. This traditional cup of coffee is served to visitors as a welcoming gesture and a way to teach others about the culture of the Greenlandic people. A welcome dinner is served at your hotel in the evening.
Day 3: Ilulissat
The morning is free to explore the area further on your own. It is possible to visit the Ilulissat Ice Fjord, now on the UNESCO World Heritage List, by helicopter however this must be booked and paid for locally. Ask your front desk for more information. In the evening enjoy a 3 hour cruise to the Ice Fjords. As the midnight sun slowly sets just above the horizon the gigantic icebergs glow a warm red color which is a fantastic sight. Sail between the icebergs while enjoying a late martini "on the rocks!"
Day 4: Ilulissat
Today is an 8 hour tour to Eqip Glacier, the only glacier in the Ilulissat area with frequent "calving." Cruise in front of the 5 km wide glacier while enjoying your lunch on board the boat. Notice the numerous seabirds in the area. They are waiting for the glacier to break which brings huge amounts of sea animals to the surface resulting in easy meals for the birds. After the tour return to Ilulissat for your last night in Greenland.
Day 5: Ilulissat - Kangerlussuaq - Copenhagen
Enjoy a leisurely morning before your flight to Kangerlussuaq and on to Copenhagen via Air Greenland. Ask Runic Travels for information on extensions in Copenhagen or other adventures throughout Scandinavia!
