ItineraryDay 1: OsloArrive in Norway's capital city of Oslo and transfer on your own to the hotel. Spend the afternoon visiting some of the many wonderful sights in Oslo such as the Holmenkollen Ski Jump, Vigeland's Sculpture Park and the famous Viking Ships Museum. The Norwegian Folk Museum is a must for anyone of Norwegian descent or those merely interested in the history of the country. Use your 24 hour Oslo City Pass for free public transportation as well as admission to the major sites and attractions throughout the city.
Day 2: Oslo - Flam - BalestrandTo get a jump start on the day, have an early breakfast at your hotel and make your way to the Central Rail Station for an 8:11am train from Oslo to Myrdal. Upon arrival transfer to the famous Flåmbana railway for a scenic journey into the Flam valley some 860 meters below. The train makes a stop half way through for a spectacular photo op of the valley and fjord as well as the cascading waterfalls and snow-capped mountains surrounding the idyllic town of Flam. Upon arrival in Flam, transfer to the high speed catamaran which cruises through the mighty Sognefjord arriving in Balestrand later that afternoon. Balestrand is a traditional Norwegian town located on the shores of Norway's largest fjord, Sognefjord. This picturesque town is known for its clean, pure air and natural beauty. Relax amid the quite peaceful surrounds or take a hike into the mountains. Your hotel can supply maps or suggestions for other options such as fjord kayaking or fishing. Tonight enjoy a traditional buffet dinner at the historic Kvikne's Hotel.
Day 3: BalestrandToday is yours to explore the area. In the morning take the express boat through the Fjærlandsfjord to the village of Fjærland, home to the Norwegian Glacier Center. Here you can learn about the creation of glaciers and see several fingers of the great Jostedal Glacier. This excursion involves a round trip cruise through the fjord to the "Book Village" of Fjærland and transportation to the museums as well as glacier viewing. When you return, use the rest of the day to hike the many trails in the area. There is even a gentle path along the fjord to the site of Viking burial mounds. Enjoy another world famous buffet dinner in the evening. Day 4: Balestrand - Sognefjord - BergenAfter breakfast take the morning or afternoon ferry through the remaining Sognefjord to the scenic city of Bergen. Upon arrival check into your hotel and enjoy the evening on your own. Your 24hr Bergen City Card can be used for free public transportation as well as admissions to some of the various museums and attractions throuhout the city. Be sure to take a ride on the famous Fløibanen funicular. It is Bergen's most famous attraction and the only cable car of its kind in Scandinavia. From the top of Mt Fløyen you can witness the 7 hills and 2 harbors that make up the beautiful city of Bergen. Spend the rest of the evening strolling the streets of Old Town or enjoying a delicious seafood dinner in one of the many wonderful restaurants along the harbor.
